HAKKORYU MARTIAL ARTS FEDERATION

The HMAF logo, as worn on the breast patch of all HMAF members, has a specific set of meanings for the wearer; and all members of HMAF should be fully cognizant of it's meaning.

The upper circle, which houses the four diamonds is the 'Mon' or family crest of the founder of Hakkoryu - Soke Okuyama, Ryuho (Dai Soke). The four diamonds represent the philosophy of spreading the teachings of Hakkoryu to the four corners of the world. In the early days of Hakkoryu, Soke Okuyama called his system , among other things, Yotsu mei or '4 eyes' system. Later he changed the name to Shido (Way of the Warrior) system. It was, however, on June 1, 1941, that he officially changed and registered the school as the HAKKO RYU (School of 8 Lights) with the Japanese Government.

The lower, inner circle represents the Japanese concept of duality, known as 'In' and 'Yo'. This is represented by a dark circle inside a light one. The outside circle represents the universe, a large portion of which is shown as light (yo). With the large 'yo' circle is shown a smaller circle ('in') representing the opposing forces in the universe. Both are inseparable, as on eis contained within the other. The symbol for 'in & yo' is used by many organizations in Japan, the most notable of them being the Japanese Karate Association (JKA) which teaches Shotokan Karate.

Finally, the two inner circles, which are together in the larger outer circle, form the figure '8', which is symbolic of the School of 8 Lights of Hakkoryu Jujutsu. The three Kanji ideograms on the patch say Hakko ryu. The patch is white with all the trim being done in purple, the color of royalty in Japan, and also the color of the Shihan belt in Hakkoryu. The red 'in' symbol is the color of the rising sun. The only difference in the patch is the HMAF Yudansha are authorized to wear the patch with a purple backround field and all the otehr trim in gold with the red 'in' symbol remaining the same.
